Carbone MCP with Claude: Automated Document Generation from Your Business Data
The short answer
Claude works with Carbone through the Model Context Protocol, an open standard that acts as a secure adapter between the two. Once connected with an API key, Claude can generate templated PDF, Word and Excel reports, send them on, update templates, and check job status, all from plain-language requests, with permissions set by your organisation.
What is Carbone?
Carbone is a report generator that turns structured JSON data into finished documents such as PDFs, Word files and spreadsheets, using flexible templates. It is designed to produce documents quickly and in large volumes with little code. Operations teams, finance departments, developers and product teams typically use it to produce invoices, statements, contracts, certificates and regular management reports from their own systems.
How Claude connects to Carbone through MCP
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard that lets Claude securely use other software, reading information and taking actions, with permissions the organisation controls. Think of it as a universal adapter between Claude and the tool. For Carbone, the connection uses your API key, so Claude only reaches what that key allows.
Once connected, Claude can typically ask Carbone to generate a document from a named template and a set of data, check whether a generation job has finished, and update or review templates. A team member might simply ask for the month's client statements to be produced, and Claude carries out the requests within the access you have granted.
People stay in charge throughout. Your organisation decides which templates and actions Claude may use, and consequential steps such as sending documents to customers can require a person's approval before they happen. Activity can be logged so every generated document can be traced back to the request that created it.
What you can automate
Monthly client statements
Finance teams can pull account data from their accounting system and ask Claude to generate a statement for each client from a standard template. Claude can check job status, flag any failed batches and prepare the files for review before release. This reduces manual copying and formatting work at month end.
Invoice and receipt production
Operations staff can request invoices for a batch of completed orders. Claude sends the order data to Carbone, which produces the PDFs in the company's branded layout. Reviewers can approve the batch before it is e-mailed to customers, so errors are caught early.
Certificates and onboarding packs
Training or HR teams can generate certificates of completion or new-starter packs from a list of names and dates. Claude can produce the documents in bulk and report which ones are ready. Consistent layouts are kept because every file comes from the same approved template.
Management and sales reports
Leaders often need the same weekly report in Excel or Word. Claude can request a fresh report from current data on a schedule, then share the output with the right people. Staff spend less time rebuilding the same document each week.
Template maintenance
When a logo, address or legal clause changes, the template must be updated everywhere. Claude can help review and update the template through the connection, with a named person approving the change before it is used for live documents.
An end-to-end workflow: Month-end client statements with delivery tracking
TriggerThe accounts team marks the month as closed in the accounting system.
Claude retrieves the closed month's account balances and transactions for each client from the accounting system.
Claude sends the data for each client to Carbone and requests a statement built from the approved statement template.
Claude checks job status and retries or reports any documents that did not complete.
The finance manager reviews a sample and approves the batch in the workflow.
Claude passes the completed PDFs to the document delivery step and logs each send against the client record in the CRM.
OutcomeStatements for the whole client base are produced and delivered in a single run, with a clear record of what was sent and when. Typical teams report far less manual preparation time at month end.
How we set it up
Free automation audit
We review your document processes and identify the reports, letters and statements that are worth automating first, at no cost.
Secure API key connection
We set up Carbone access using an API key, stored securely and limited to the permissions your templates and workflows need. Claude connects to Carbone through an MCP server or the direct API, whichever suits your setup.
Workflow design
We map the full process across Carbone and your other systems such as Microsoft 365, CRM, ERP or ticketing, deciding where people approve documents before they go out.
Testing with real cases
We test templates and workflows against past real cases to confirm the output matches your standards before anything goes live.
Launch and team training
We launch with monitoring and audit logs in place, then train your team to use the workflow confidently and to manage templates safely.

- Operations lead
- Generates batches of order documents and tracks their status without manual handling.
- HR or training coordinator
- Creates certificates and onboarding packs consistently from one approved template.
- IT or developer team
- Connects document generation to existing systems with a controlled, auditable API key setup.
Security and control
- Access is limited by the API key, granted with the least permissions needed for each workflow.
- Templates are version-controlled, and changes are approved by a named owner before use on live documents.
- Consequential actions such as sending documents to customers require human approval.
- Audit logs record which requests generated which documents, supporting traceability.
- Test runs against real past cases are completed before launch, and output is spot-checked over time.

Frequently asked questions
What does the Carbone MCP server do?
The Carbone MCP server is a secure bridge that lets Claude request document generation, check job status and work with templates in Carbone. It translates Claude's requests into the actions Carbone supports. You get the same capability as the direct API, presented in a form Claude can use in plain language.
Is connecting Carbone to Claude secure?
Security depends on how access is set up. Carbone uses an API key, which we store securely and limit to the permissions each workflow needs. Activity can be logged, and people approve sensitive actions. We design the setup so Claude can only do what your organisation has allowed.
What can Claude do with Carbone once connected?
Typically Claude can generate PDF, Word and Excel documents from a named template and data, check whether jobs have completed, help deliver finished documents and review or update templates. The exact actions depend on how your workflow is designed and the permissions granted.
How long does setup take?
Timing depends on how many templates and systems are involved. A focused single-template workflow can often be set up quickly, while a multi-system process with several approval steps takes longer. We confirm a realistic timeline during the free automation audit, after reviewing your requirements.
What access or plan do I need for Carbone?
Generally, you need an active Carbone account and an API key with permissions that cover the templates and actions your workflow uses. The specific plan requirements are confirmed with you during the audit, so we only ask for access that is necessary.
